THE DON HUNTER COLLECTION

LEEROY

Driving for Junior Johnson, LeeRoy Yarbrough put together an incredible season in 1969.

Yarbrough won the Daytona 500, the World 600 and the Southern 500, as well as four other events that season. Because he ran only 30 of the season’s 54 races, Yarbrough finished 16th in the final point standings.

Yarbrough captured the last of his 14 career NASCAR wins at Charlotte in October 1970. Sadly, his life was beset by a series of personal problems and he fell out of the sport entirely after running his last NASCAR race at Martinsville on Sept. 24, 1972.

After being committed to a Florida mental institution, Yarbrough died on Dec. 7, 1984. He was elected to the National Motorsports Press Association Hall of Fame in 1990.
