RECOMMENDED BOOKS

SECOND TO NONE

OK … so on this one, Editor Rick Houston is a little biased. Rick is the author of Second To None: The History of the NASCAR Busch Series. It’s considered the benchmark work on the division’s once-proud tradition.

DRIVING WITH THE DEVIL

If NASCAR’s moonshine-soaked history has been at times forgotten, it comes roaring back in this project by Neal Thompson. It’s a no-holds-barred look at ‘shine mogul Raymond Parks’ contributions to the sport’s beginnings, and how whiskey-trippers Roy Hall and Lloyd Seay became two of racing’s earliest star drivers.

NASCAR

Greg Fielden is the very definition of a racing historian, and this gorgeous book proves it. You’ve never seen many of the photos in this book, and you’ve never discovered much of its information. An absolute must-have.

RICHARD PETTY'S AUDIO SCRAPBOOK

This project by longtime friends Steve Waid and Tom Higgins has been optioned for a movie, and for good reason. Yes, the book details Junior Johnson’s life in racing, but it also delves deeply into his past life as a Wilkes County moonshiner. It’s in those chapters that Brave In Life most succeeds. You’ll have to look for it, but it’s worth the hunt.

JUNIOR JOHNSON

If you can’t actually sit down with Richard Petty, Dale Inman and Barney Hall about NASCAR history, this is the next best thing. You’ll hear stories you’ve never heard … like the time Richard clung to his dad’s car, trying to clean the windshield.

ALONG FOR THE RIDE

If you have even a passing interest in NASCAR lore, you won’t be able to put down this work by “ink-stained wretch” Larry Woody. You’ll get stories about a late-night (or was it early-morning) encounter with Dale Earnhardt as well as Woody’s infamous run-in with Tony Stewart. Woody pulls no punches.

UNSEEN EARNHARDT: THE MAN BEHIND THE MASK

The essays on Dale Earnhardt’s career are good enough, but the real drawing card here is a treasure trove of artwork from the files of master photographer Dick Conway. This is the definitive work on Earnhardt’s career.

RICHARD PETTY

Another masterpiece drawn largely from the photographic files of Dick Conway. Richard Petty is The King, and this book is The King of Books on The King.

BEST DAMN GARAGE IN TOWN

Far and away the most comprehensive autobiography of any NASCAR-related personality, this massive 1,100-page, three-volume tome is one home-spun anecdote after another. Yunick spoke his mind in person and on paper, and this effort proves it. Be cautioned, though, that there is adult content to be found here.

THE GREAT AMERICAN GAMBLE

This project is written by NASCAR.COM’s Joe Menzer and focuses on the impact of the 1979 Daytona 500 had on our sport. It is a most definite page turner.
