THE DON HUNTER COLLECTION

ON THE DIRT AT HICKORY

Pole-sitter Junior Johnson (26) and Curtis Turner (2) prepare for the start of the Buddy Shuman Memorial held Sept. 10, 1965.

Johnson was leading with 40 laps to go in the 250 lapper when a tire went down on his Ford. The problem forced him to the pits, where he lost two laps. He came back to finish fourth behind race winner Richard Petty, runnerup David Pearson and third-place Ned Jarrett.

Turner drove a car owned by Johnson in the event, but dropped out with overheating problems after completing only 35 laps. He was credited with a 22nd-place finish.
