ALL DRESSED UP AND READY TO RACE

Driver Hugh Lunsford relaxes with a bottle of soda following a long-ago race, presumably on the old Daytona beach-and-road course and dating to before World War II.

Not much is known about Lunsford, and an Internet search turned up nothing about him. However, it's his attire that truly sets this shot apart from the pack. Check out the suit and tie. Evidently, when Lunsford raced, he dressed to impress!

The photograph is part of the collection of Bud Baity, a longtime race fan, sprint car owner and businessman. It was taken by Charles Grenell, who owned a photo print shop and supply store in Daytona Beach and Waynesville, N.C. in the early-to-mid 20th century. Grenell, a veteran of World War I, died in 1962.
