Just a reminder ... ESPN will debut a documentary film on Tim Richmond tomorrow night at 8 p.m. Eastern. Looking forward to seeing how Tim's story is told ... check out a trailer at http://www.espnmediazone3.com/us/media-kits/espn-films/espn-films-30-for-30-trailers/

I miss Sunday afternoon's riding around in the car with my Dad listening to the race on the radio, because we had no other choice, IT WASN'T ON TV!

Not bad. I was glad to see they used so much of "Tim" through the old video clips. It helps people see what he was like. There was a lot left out, but it was only a one hour show. Smiley

Taken as a whole, I thought it was well done - especially considering the sensitive nature of the subject even to this day. A couple of things concerned me about the production though as compared to other 30 for 30 episodes.

  • I noticed NASCAR Media Group co-produced the episode. Is that the only way video footage would be allowed to be included? Did they have a heavy hand in massaging the story of how the sport reacted to Tim and his illness?
  • DW was mentioned as being his teammate. I'll have to admit I thought it was a mistake at first. My memory had DW joining HMS in 1989 vs. winning Daytona in 89 in his 3rd yr w/the team. Still, Waltrip joined HMS the year AFTER Tim's monster 1986. I hardly believe DW was close enough to Tim to have earned as much air time in the episode as he did.
  • Where was Geoff Bodine, his teammate in the 5? Barry Dodson? Raymond Beadle? Dale Inman? Or others who worked with him and could added more insight - good or bad.
  • Its a shame Harry Hyde wasn't still around to add his comments to the story.

In the end as was mentioned, they had an hour with which to work. And they told about as balanced as story as could be expected I suppose. Kyle's empathetic comments were appreciated. And I had not seen the footage before that opened and closed the show - of Tim trying to keep up his outward coolness appearance while looking through the Charlotte suite window knowing it was over - his career and his life.
