THE TOM KIRKLAND COLLECTION

SMOKEY AND PAUL
Smokey Yunick had a way of making an engine sing and NASCAR officials fume, all of which contributed to his legend in the sport.
Based out of his "Best Damn Garage in Town" in Daytona, Yunick fielded cars for some of NASCAR's biggest names, including Herb Thomas, Curtis Turner and Fireball Roberts.
Here, Yunick is shown with driver Paul Goldsmith prior to the 1957 Southern 500 at Darlington. Sadly, Goldsmith was involved in a vicious accident on lap 27 that claimed the life of fellow driver Bobby Myers. Fonty Flock was also involved in the terrible mishap.
